Adding Fractions – Same Denominator

Adding fractions can sound tricky, but it’s very simple! These 3 steps will show you how to add fractions.

Step 1: Make sure the denominators (bottom numbers) are the same number.

Step 2: Add the numerators (top numbers).

Step 3: Simply the fraction (if needed).

Example:

Adding Fractions – Different Denominator

Step 1: Make the denominators the same by multiplying.

Step 2: Add the numerators.

Step 3: Simplify the fraction if needed.

Example:

Step 1: Multiply to make the denominators the same. “Whatever you do to the bottom, you do to the top.”

Step 2: Now that they’re the same, just add the numerators and keep the denominators the same.

Step 3: Simply your answer.
